Outlines

The purpose of the Research Center is to expand further and develop intracellular degradation research, including autophagy studies, which Japan has been leading, and to advance it to a new level. To promote research on intracellular degradation, which has unique features at multiple interrelated levels, forming a strategic research group is both effective and essential.
The center will organically connect research at each level of the hierarchy through collaboration among basic researchers, both within and outside the university (e.g., in structural biology, ultramorphology, and imaging, etc.) and clinical researchers specializing in neurodegenerative diseases, metabolic disorders, and hematologic cancers. A key focus will be high-depth proteome analysis using mass spectrometry. Through this collaboration, we aim to elucidate the molecular basis, dynamics in various cells and tissues, and the pathophysiological significance of proteostasis (protein homeostasis) and organellostasis (cell organelle homeostasis) via intracellular degradation.
Simultaneously, the center will work to mentor young researchers by integrating its unique research methods and features, while adapting to trends across a wide range of research fields through collaborative efforts with leading researchers worldwide. We seek to achieve innovative and significant advancements in intracellular degradation research.
